• A dragonfly that flies at 50 km/h with four wings moving independently — each wing can angle and rotate separately, letting the blue emperor hover like a helicopter, accelerate sideways, or flip upside down mid-air. This four-wing mastery makes them one of the planet's most agile aerial hunters, able to pluck mosquitoes from the air with a success rate above 95%.
• Their eyes wrap almost 360 degrees around their head and process images 300 times per second — meaning they see the world in extreme slow-motion compared to humans. A dragonfly detecting a tiny midge 10 metres away will track its exact flight path in real time, then intercept it before the midge has time to react.
• The blue emperor's nymphs spend 2 to 5 years underwater as aquatic predators, their bodies armoured like tiny tanks with extensible jaws that snap out to spear fish fry and tadpoles. When it's time to transform into a winged adult, they crawl onto a reed at dawn, their skin splits down the back, and within hours a completely different creature emerges — the final metamorphosis lasting just one day.
• Males patrol their stretch of river or pond obsessively, flying the same 200-metre route up to 1,000 times a day, diving at rivals and chasing away competitors with dive-bomb attacks at full speed. This territorial behaviour is so precise that researchers can predict which bank a male will patrol based on water depth and vegetation — each blue emperor knows its kingdom stone by stone.
• Their brilliant blue body — deeper and more saturated in older males — develops through pruning, not pigment: the colour comes from nano-scale structures in their exoskeleton that scatter blue light, similar to how a butterfly's wing works. This means a faded blue emperor has simply worn down these microscopic ridges through weeks of intense flight and combat, like an old warrior's armour.
