• A dragonfly's cousin smaller than your pinky nail hunts by literally skimming its abdomen across water surfaces — dipping its tail in mid-flight to pluck mosquito larvae from just below the surface. The skimming bluet does this hundreds of times a day, its 2-centimetre body moving so fast the human eye can barely track it. Most dragonflies hunt in air; this one has rewritten the rulebook.
• Male skimming bluets spend hours patrolling the same 10-metre stretch of pond, making over 100 passes per hour in search of females — and they recognise each other individually. Researchers have shown that males remember rival males and adjust their patrol routes to avoid head-on collision. In a creature with a brain the size of a sesame seed, this is a form of personality.
• Unlike most damselflies that live as aquatic nymphs for months, a skimming bluet spends just 4–6 weeks underwater before crawling onto a leaf, splitting its skin, and emerging as a flying adult. That entire transformation from egg to winged hunter takes roughly two months — one of the fastest complete life cycles in the damselfly world.
• The skimming bluet's eyes wrap nearly 360 degrees around its head, giving it four separate visual zones: up, down, forward, and backward. Each eye moves independently, letting it track a moving insect larva in the water while simultaneously watching for predatory dragonflies approaching from above — a survival advantage in ponds where everything hunts everything else.
• Across North America, skimming bluets are among the earliest damselflies to emerge in spring — sometimes appearing in April when temperatures barely reach 15°C. They can hunt in colder water than almost any of their relatives, which means they own the early-season food supply before competitors arrive. This adaptation has made them one of the continent's most abundant blue damselflies.
