• A blind cavefish's head is covered in 2,000+ neuromast organs — sensory pits that detect the tiniest water movements up to a millimetre away. They can feel a mosquito larva wiggling 15 centimetres off and navigate pitch-black caves like sighted fish navigate daylight. This 'distant touch' works so well that losing eyes was actually a profitable trade: the energy saved by shrinking useless eyeballs got reinvested in the brain and nervous system.
• Blind cavefish live in total darkness for their entire lives — yet they're born with functional eyes that dissolve into scar tissue within weeks. The eye lens degrades first, then the tissue underneath collapses. A protein called Pax6 (the same one that builds human eyes) still activates in the embryo, but degeneration genes shut it down before the eye could ever be useful. • Blind cavefish are immune to cancer in ways scientists still don't fully understand. Researchers have injected them with cells that cause tumours in humans and other fish — nothing happens. Their blood contains a protein called p53 that kills cells at the first sign of mutation, and their immune cells work overtime. They're living inside a cancer-prevention mechanism so effective that pharmaceutical companies are mapping it for human medicine.
