• Black vultures hunt in packs — sometimes 20 or more birds working as a coordinated unit to drive larger vultures away from a kill or tear open the toughest hides. Unlike their solitary cousins, they depend on teamwork so thoroughly that a single vulture on its own struggles to eat. This is the only vulture species in the Americas that hunts socially, and it reshapes how they compete for food across a landscape.
• A black vulture's stomach acid is so corrosive it dissolves bone in under 48 hours — a chemical weapon against tuberculosis, anthrax, and botulism that would kill most scavengers. They can safely consume carcasses no other animal dares touch. This digestive superpower makes them nature's cleanup crew, preventing disease spread across North and Central America in a way no other vulture can match.
• Black vultures have colonized North America only in the last 60 years, expanding their range northward from the Caribbean and Central America at roughly 1 to 2 kilometres per year. In 1900 they barely reached the southern United States; today they're common across the entire eastern seaboard and into Canada. Climate change and warmer winters have opened a continent that was previously locked against them.
• They navigate using smell as much as sight — one of the few vultures that can track a carcass by odour alone, not just by following other birds. Their sense of smell is sharp enough to detect a rotting animal from several kilometres away, which means they hunt independently even when clouds hide the sun or thermal updrafts fail. This two-track hunting system makes them brutally efficient.
• A black vulture's feathers are coated in a water-repelling wax so effective they can stay dry while wading through putrid fluids and decomposing tissue. Combined with no bacteria-carrying feathers on their bare head and neck, they've evolved into a biological hazmat suit. This naked skin also acts as a radiator — dark and exposed to catch the morning sun — letting them warm up fast before a day of soaring.
