Fascinating facts about the Black Titi
- The black titi claims the biggest stretch of any Cheracebus monkey, spreading from Brazil's Branco River and Rio Negro all the way north to the Orinoco and Caquetá basins. This massive footprint means the species can be found across three countries, Brazil, Colombia and Venezuela, and occupies a swath of Amazonian forest far larger than its close relatives.
- Black titi families are built around a monogamous pair plus usually one or two offspring, averaging 3.5 individuals per group in a Vichada survey of ten groups. Occasionally a five-member troupe appears, and lone "floaters" drift through the forest. Young leave the group in their second year, sometimes lingering into a third.
- Each black titi patrols a home range of roughly 15-25 hectares, and suitable forest can support 4-5 groups per square kilometre, about 14 individuals plus floaters, which may add another 8-10 monkeys to the local density. Daily travel distances hover around 800 m, with one Peruvian study reporting an average of 819.4 m over 22 days and a Colombian site noting 807.2 m (range 513.7-1070 m).
- Fruits dominate the black titi menu, making up 74.1 % of all bites, while insects provide 15.8 % and leaves 8.8 %. the palm Jessenia polycarpa alone accounted for 22.7 % of feeding events, and a broader survey listed 62 plant species across 32 families, with Myristicaceae contributing 25.02 % of intake.
- A captive female at the Caparú station showed an estrus cycle of about 16 days, with a 2-3-day receptive window marked by swollen labia, loud purring and aggressive defence against outsiders. In the wild, one pair was observed staying together for 14 years, producing ten offspring, all surviving their first year, before a four-year lull in births.
