About the Black Sea Bass

The black sea bass (Centropristis striata) glides through the western Atlantic with an oblong, laterally-compressed silhouette that can reach 66 cm, though most individuals hover around 30 cm. Its smoky-grey to blue-black back is flecked with pale blue-white spots that align into longitudinal stripes, while the dorsal fin bears a series of white spots and bands. In breeding season, males flash bright fluorescent blues and greens around the eyes and nape, a vivid contrast to the duller, brownish females. Juveniles display four distinct colour phases, from light grey with dark speckles to a barred pattern of six vertical bars, each a camouflage masterpiece for the rocky estuaries they inhabit. These bass are bottom-dwelling predators, aggregating around rock jetties, wrecks, and man-made structures from shallow reefs down to 130 m. Their diet is a veritable buffet of crabs, shrimps, barnacles, worms, tunicates, small fish, and bivalves, while they themselves fall prey to larger fish such as monkfish, striped bass, and sharks. A surprising trait lies in their reproductive strategy: they are protogynous hermaphrodites, beginning life as females and later transforming into males, a shift likely triggered by a shortage of males within a spawning group. Their eggs, tiny pelagic spheres just under a millimetre, hatch in 75 hours at 16 °C, releasing larvae that drift until they grow to about 13 mm and adopt a demersal habit.
