Fascinating facts about the Black Rhinoceros

• A black rhino can weigh 1,400 kg but move through thornbush so dense a human would need a machete — their body is a wedge, their skin armoured at 2 cm thick, their legs positioned to power through obstacles most animals simply cannot enter. This is why poachers hunt them in their own refuge. In 1970 there were 65,000 black rhinos across Africa. By 1993 there were 2,300. Today fewer than 6,000 exist, nearly all in protected reserves.
• Their two horns are not bone — they're made of keratin, the same protein as human fingernails, but compressed into a weapon so valuable that a single rhino's horns can sell for more than a house in many African countries. A black rhino horn grows throughout the animal's entire life, yet it has no roots, no nerve endings, no blood vessels. It is dead tissue mounted on living animals, and we are driving them extinct to powder it.
• Black rhinos are solitary hunters of the plant world — they browse vegetation up to 2 metres high, using a prehensile upper lip shaped like a pointed finger to pluck specific leaves and twigs no other large herbivore can reach. A single rhino needs roughly 20 kg of food daily and walks 5 to 10 kilometres each night to find it, using well-worn paths called 'rhino roads' that persist for generations. Their feeding habits sculpt the landscape; without them, savanna transforms.
• A black rhino calf stays with its mother for 3 years, longer than any other African megaherbivore — the mother teaches the calf which plants to eat, where to find water in drought, and how to avoid predators. Female rhinos live 35 to 50 years in the wild, meaning one mother might raise only 5 or 6 calves in a lifetime. Poaching a single female can erase decades of breeding effort.
• Their eyesight is poor — a black rhino sees clearly only up to 30 metres — but their hearing and smell are acute enough to detect a human from 50 metres downwind. Yet this ancient warning system evolved against lions and hyaenas, not firearms. In some reserves, the last few dozen rhinos live with armed guards 24 hours a day, hunted so intensely that survival itself has become a human occupation.
