• A black-footed ferret needs to eat one prairie dog every day just to survive — and there are only around 300–400 left in the wild today. For decades scientists thought the species was extinct, until a single population of 18 individuals was discovered in Wyoming in 1981. Every black-footed ferret alive now descends from those 18, making them genetically identical twins. One disease could wipe them all out.
• Their skeleton is a tube: a black-footed ferret's body is so thin and flexible it can chase prairie dogs through burrows as narrow as a golf ball. They have 15 ribs instead of the 13 most mammals carry, giving them a compression advantage no predator needs. Underground, in the prairie dog's own home, the ferret becomes a ghost that can turn on a dime.
• Black-footed ferrets spend 90% of their lives underground in prairie dog towns, surfacing only to hunt or move between burrow systems. A single ferret's home range can stretch across 40 hectares — an area larger than 56 football fields — because prairie dog colonies are scattered and patchy. When the Great Plains were ploughed under and prairie dogs poisoned, ferrets had nowhere left to hunt.
• A mother ferret can birth up to 10 kits in spring, but they won't emerge from the burrow until they're 5 weeks old. The father plays no role; she hunts, teaches the young to kill, and defends her territory alone. By autumn, young ferrets must disperse to find their own prairie dog towns — a death sentence in fragmented landscapes where colonies sit kilometres apart.
• The prairie dog is not optional — it is the black-footed ferret's only real meal. They have evolved to hunt one species so exclusively that when prairie dogs vanished from 98% of the Great Plains by 1900, ferrets vanished with them. Today, every ferret reintroduction program must first restore prairie dog colonies, making ferret recovery a two-species puzzle. Save the prairie dog, or the ferret stays extinct.
