• A black caiman can grow to 6.3 metres — longer than a grand piano — making it the largest crocodilian in the Americas and one of the apex predators that shaped rainforest ecology for millions of years. • Unlike most caimans, black caimans hunt at night with a precision that depends on heat-sensing pits lining their jaws — each pit detects a temperature difference as small as 0.01°C, letting them strike a warm-blooded fish in absolute darkness.
