• Male bicolored striped sweat bees are iridescent green; females are black and gold. This sexual dimorphism is so striking that early entomologists classified them as two separate species for decades. The males' metallic sheen comes from the microscopic structure of their exoskeleton, not pigment — the same physics that makes oil slicks rainbow. This colour reversal (males bright, females dull) flips the pattern seen in most other bee species, hinting at unusual mating dynamics in their underground colonies.
• They're called sweat bees because they're attracted to human perspiration and will land on your skin to drink salt. A single bee contains roughly 5 milligrams of body weight, yet it needs enough sodium daily to maintain its nervous system and muscle function. In the heat of summer, a person sitting in an open field can attract dozens within minutes — not aggression, just thirst. This behaviour has made them one of the few wild insects most North Americans have touched without realising it.

This flexibility makes them resilient to monoculture agriculture, unlike specialist bees tied to single host plants. • Males emerge in late summer and live only 3 to 6 weeks before dying — one of the shortest adult lifespans among North American bees. Females overwinter as solitary adults buried in their own brood cells, surviving months of freezing temperatures in a dormant state called diapause.
