• When the Carolina grasshopper takes off to escape, the dark hindwings flash black and yellow, changing the insect from a mostly brown camouflage to a high-contrast display and roughly doubling its visible size in under nine milliseconds; the reverse happens in less than fifteen milliseconds when it lands. This rapid colour shift makes the grasshopper appear to appear and disappear instantly to human observers.
• During flight the Carolina grasshopper's hindwings alternate between brief pauses and active beating about six times each second, while the wings themselves beat more than thirty times per second, producing a jittery, unstable silhouette. This rapid flickering creates a confusing image for predators that try to track the insect. The combination of pause-beat cycles and high wing-beat frequency makes the silhouette appear to shift erratically in the air.
• After a male successfully attracts a female, the pair may remain physically joined for as long as sixteen hours, allowing extended copulation. Males can spend five minutes or more stridulating by rubbing hindlegs against the tegmen to draw the female close before mounting.
