• A summer chafer spends almost its entire life underground. The adult beetle — shimmering green and copper, no bigger than your thumbnail — lives for just 6 to 8 weeks above soil. But before that, its larva tunnels through the earth for two full years, munching on grass roots in complete darkness. When it finally emerges in June, it has only weeks to find a mate before it dies.
• Summer chafers fly in the heat of the day when most insects hide. Between 11am and 3pm, when temperatures peak above 20°C, thousands of them thrash through open grasslands in clumsy, stuttering flight — so clumsily that early naturalists thought they were drunk. Cool them down to 10°C and they simply can't fly. This timing means they avoid most predators but expose themselves to birds that hunt in midday sun.
• Male summer chafers have a weapon females lack: a pair of curved horns on their head that look like tiny bull horns. They use these to wrestle other males for mating access, locking horns and shoving — a tournament that plays out across grass stems every June afternoon. The loser tumbles into the undergrowth while the winner guards females. No horns means no chance.
• A single summer chafer larva can strip a square metre of lawn bare in two years. That makes them pests in parks and gardens across Europe, but their boom-and-bust cycle is violent and unpredictable. Some years populations explode; other years they crash for reasons scientists still don't fully understand, likely tied to soil moisture and fungal diseases that infect the pupae deep underground.
• Summer chafers were named after the summer solstice — the longest day of the year — because they emerge almost exactly when daylight peaks in the Northern Hemisphere. Their life cycle is locked to this astronomical event by day length, not temperature alone. This means as climate change shifts seasons, summer chafers may eventually emerge before or after the peak insects they depend on, throwing their entire world out of sync.
