• A summer chafer larva spends a two to three-year period of development underground, feeding upon host plants, before emerging as an adult. During this long hidden stage, carobid beetles such as Poecilus cupreus hunt and consume the larvae, acting as a primary predator in arable fields.
• From June to August, summer chafers swarm meadows, hedgerows, and gardens across the Palearctic. Their presence is especially noted throughout Europe, extending into Turkey and even occurring in portions of East Asia. This wide geographic spread means they can affect agriculture over a vast area.
• Summer chafers act as root pests for a number of economically important crops including potatoes, rape, legumes, chestnuts, and turfgrass. As generalist herbivores, they primarily feed upon secondary roots with smaller amounts of anti-herbivore chemicals across many different species. Their broad diet lets them thrive in varied farms.
• At dusk, summer chafers actively fly around treetops looking for a mate and are drawn to artificial lights, often entering homes through open windows and buzzing around lamps, creating quite a racket while bumping into lights.
