About the Beddome's Cat Snake

Beddome's cat snake, Boiga beddomei, is a sleek, rear-fanged colubrid that slips through the evergreen forests of India's Western Ghats with an elegance that belies its modest size. Its slender body is capped by a head that clearly separates from the neck, and its dorsal scales, arranged in 19 oblique rows, feature a striking pattern of grayish-brown ground colour crossed by dark brown vertebral bars, while the ventral side glows a yellowish-cream dusted with blackish speckles. The vertebral row swells into a pronounced, hexagonal ridge, a distinctive hallmark among its congeners. By night, this arboreal hunter climbs the canopy up to 1,000 m, its nocturnal habits allowing it to ambush a menu of dragon lizards, geckos, skinks and frogs, all captured with the subtle efficiency of its rear-fanged apparatus. A surprising trait for a forest dweller is its oviparous reproduction, laying eggs that hatch into miniature replicas of the adult, ready to inherit the same twilight trails of the Western Ghats. The snake’s presence in the hill ranges of Maharashtra, Bhimashankar, Mulshi, Koyna, Vasota, Gujarat, Goa and northern Karnataka underscores a distribution as fragmented as the forest patches it calls home, inviting further study of its ecological niche.
