• A wild banteng bull weighs up to 900 kg but moves through rainforest so silently that researchers often spot only their hoof prints — deep indents in mud the size of a human palm — long after the animal has passed. Their hooves are splayed and tough, evolved for grip on wet forest floors where heavier cattle would sink and slide. This stealth in a 900-kilogram body is one of the forest's best-kept secrets.
• Bantengs have been extinct in the wild in Thailand since 2007, Malaysia since the 1950s, and now survive in fewer than 5,000 individuals across Borneo and Java. Yet in 2003, a banteng named Noah became the first endangered mammal ever cloned from preserved DNA — creating a genetic copy of a species that humans nearly erased. The cloned calf lived, but died in 2007, raising the question: can we tech our way out of extinction, or does it just delay the real problem?
• Female bantengs are russet-brown with a glossy coat, while bulls turn nearly black by adulthood and sprout curved horns that can stretch to 60 centimetres. This extreme sexual dimorphism — the difference in appearance between males and females — is so striking that early naturalists thought they were separate species. The contrast signals that only the strongest bulls mate, shaping which genes pass forward.
• A banteng's stomach is divided into four chambers, a trait it shares with cattle and deer but not with most other wild bovines. This ruminant system allows them to eat tough fibrous plants, regurgitate them, and digest slowly — a strategy that lets them extract maximum nutrition from leaves high in tannins that would poison most herbivores. It's why they thrive in rainforests where the buffet is abundant but defensive.
• Bantengs breed year-round with no fixed season, which means calves can be born in any month. But in protected reserves where poaching pressure has eased, researchers noticed births cluster in the wet season — suggesting the forest itself is the real timer. Fresh grass abundance and water security signal to females when a newborn has the best chance of survival, a behavioural memory written into their bodies over millennia.
