About the Tiger Tail Seahorse

The tiger-tail seahorse (Hippocampus comes) is a medium-sized, 15-centimetre marvel of the Western Central Pacific, its body cloaked in a striking mosaic of alternating yellow and black. Eleven bony trunk rings and up to thirty-seven tail rings form a rigid armor, while a low coronet crowned with five knobs sits atop a head that ends in a pronounced nose spine. Its snout, just 2.2 inches long, functions like a delicate straw, sucking up a diet of tiny fish, shrimp, plankton and even fragments of coral. The tail bears bold stripes that run from the belly to the tip, a visual cue that gives the species its common name, and thin white radiating lines may fringe the eyes, adding a subtle radiance to its nocturnal silhouette. In the dim hours, pairs of tiger-tail seahorses cling to coral reefs, sponge gardens, kelp forests, or drifting Sargassum, their upright swimming defying the horizontal norm of most fish. Males bear the reproductive burden, cradling anywhere from one to two thousand eggs in a chest-bound brood pouch for one to four weeks before releasing fully formed juveniles. In captivity they survive 0-1.5 years, while in the wild they can live up to five years, a testament to their resilience despite a habitat that ranges from 15°N to 1°N in warm tropical waters. Their bony, scale-less skin makes them an unlikely prey, a surprising adaptation that lets them navigate the perilous reef environment with a degree of invulnerability few fish possess…
