• A Pacific reef heron can turn itself white or dark grey — switching plumage colour completely between moults, a trick only a handful of heron species pull off. Scientists still don't fully understand the trigger: stress, light levels, or social rank might all play a role. What's certain is that both colours hunt equally well on tropical reefs, suggesting the switch isn't about camouflage but something subtler, possibly about signalling identity to rivals.
• Watch one hunt and you'll see it stand motionless for 20 minutes, then strike in 200 milliseconds — faster than you can blink. Its neck muscles compress like a coiled spring, and the kink in its neck acts as a fulcrum that amplifies force. A fish in murky reef water never sees it coming, because the heron's eye can track movement in light levels so dim other birds would be blind.
• Pacific reef herons are solitary hunters by day but gather in loose flocks at dusk, perching shoulder to shoulder on mangrove roots and rocky outcrops. They don't nest in colonies like most herons — each pair keeps a feeding territory of about 2 hectares that they defend fiercely. This solitary lifestyle means they've never developed the complex social hierarchies or breeding displays that make other herons gregarious; instead, they hunt alone and meet only to breed.
• Unlike most herons that wade in shallow water, the Pacific reef heron hunts on exposed rocks and fallen trees, sometimes in saltwater pools barely 30 centimetres deep. It will even pluck crabs and small fish from between rocks while hopping, almost like a terrestrial bird. This shift to rocky habitats freed it from competing with larger herons for mudflats and shallow bays, letting a smaller heron thrive where others couldn't.

Genetic analysis shows they split roughly 2 million years ago, making them cryptic sister species.
