Arctic Char

Fascinating facts about the Arctic Char

• A single Arctic char can weigh up to 9 kg (20 lb), but dwarf individuals may be as light as 0.2 kg (7 oz) and only 8 cm (3 in) long, showing a size gap of more than 40 times. This dwarf-giant dimorphism lets the species fill both tiny prey niches and become top predators in the same lake. It illustrates how flexible growth strategies can drive survival in extreme, food-limited waters.
• In Lake Tinn, Norway, a translucent relative of the char was discovered at a depth of 430 m (1,410 ft) in 2004, measuring up to 15 cm (5.9 in) and lacking a swim bladder.
• Arctic char are the only freshwater fish recorded as far north as Lake Hazen on Ellesmere Island, reaching 81°56′ N, making them the most northerly freshwater vertebrate known. No other freshwater species tolerates those icy conditions, highlighting the char’s extraordinary cold-adaptation. Their presence marks the biological edge of life in the Arctic’s frozen realms.
• Anadromous char begin their first ocean migration between ages 4 and 13, spending roughly two months at sea before returning to fresh water to spawn each summer. This delayed, brief marine phase lets them exploit rich coastal food sources while still relying on isolated lakes for reproduction. It shows a remarkable life-history balance between oceanic bounty and the safety of frozen inland waters.
• A female anadromous char can lay between 3,000 and 5,000 eggs, and unlike Pacific salmon, the species can survive spawning to reproduce again every two to three years. Repeated spawning without death allows individuals to contribute offspring across multiple decades, buffering populations against harsh Arctic fluctuations. This strategy reveals how longevity and repeat breeding help sustain species where breeding windows are short and unpredictable.
