• For 70 years, scientists thought the Appalachian cottontail was just a variation of the Eastern cottontail—until 1992 when genetic testing proved they were a separate species that split from their cousins 3.5 million years ago. They're so alike you'd struggle to tell them apart by eye, but their DNA reveals a rabbit that evolved in isolation across the Appalachian highlands, never interbreeding with the Eastern cottontail despite living within kilometres of each other.
• Unlike their Eastern cousins that thrive in open fields and suburbs, Appalachian cottontails are forest rabbits that live at higher elevations where fog rolls in and hardwood trees dominate—a niche so specific and fragile that they've lost 90% of their original range in the last century as mountaintop logging cleared their habitat.
• A mother Appalachian cottontail gives birth to 4–6 leverets (baby rabbits) in a shallow burrow or nest lined with fur, and the kits are born blind and helpless; she nurses them only once or twice a day in short 5-minute visits to avoid drawing predators to the nest, then leaves them completely for 23 hours at a time.
