• It has 50 teeth — more than any other mammal on Earth except certain whales. Those teeth don't make it a hunter though; they're built for crushing beetle exoskeletons and seed casings. Each molar is a tiny hammer designed to access the protein-rich insides of forest invertebrates most other animals can't process.
• When threatened, it plays dead so convincingly that predators lose interest in seconds. It drops into a coma-like state, goes rigid, and excretes a foul green fluid from anal glands that smells like carrion. It's not an act—its heart rate and body temperature plummet. Some predators have walked away mid-kill and left it untouched.
• It's one of the few marsupials that survived outside Australia. While kangaroos and koalas stayed put, opossums crossed the Pacific gap 64 million years ago and colonised two continents. The Andean white-eared opossum is a direct descendant of those ancient pioneers, now thriving in mountain forests where no other marsupial lives.
• It climbs trees with a prehensile tail that grips like a fifth limb — a feature shared by no other marsupial outside the Americas.
