• Antarctic fur seals dominate the world's fur-seal numbers, with South Georgia alone holding roughly 95% of all individuals. The best current estimate for that colony is between 4.5 million and 6.2 million seals, while the second-largest site on Bouvet Island supports just 46,834 animals. This extreme concentration means that any regional threat, such as climate-driven krill loss around South Georgia, can ripple through the species as a whole, because most of the breeding stock depends on that single archipelago for reproduction.
• Male Antarctic fur seals can grow to about 2 m (6.5 ft) long and weigh an average of 133 kg (293 lb), making them four to five times heavier than females, which average 34 kg (74.9 lb) at 1.4 m (4.6 ft).
