Fascinating facts about the Anglerfish

• Females dwarf their mates by orders of magnitude, turning the anglerfish into a living case study of extreme sexual dimorphism. While a male Ceratias holboelli may only grow to 16 cm (6.3 in) SL, females typically reach about 77 cm (2.53 ft) TL and can weigh ten times more than the tiny partner. Even the tiniest known male, Photocorynus spiniceps, measures just 6.2-7.3 mm (0.24-0.29 in) at maturity, once hailed as the smallest vertebrate. This size gap forces males to become permanent parasites, attaching permanently to the far larger females for survival and reproduction.
• The anglerfish's "fishing rod" can be longer than its own body, turning a modest fish into a walking lantern. In the deep-sea species Gigantactis macronema the illicium stretches to about 4.9 times the standard length, meaning the lure is over four times longer than the rest of the fish's body. This extreme extension lets the predator dangle a glowing bait far into the darkness, increasing the chance that unsuspecting prey will wander close enough to be snapped up.
• Anglerfish have been haunting the seas since the age of dinosaurs, with fossils dating back to the Eocene yet hints they first appeared in the Cretaceous. The oldest known specimens come from the Monte Bolca formation in Italy, showing the modern families were already diversified. Molecular clocks place their split between 130 and 100 million years ago, while later studies narrow it to 92-61 million years ago, suggesting a rapid Cretaceous radiation.
• Finding a mate in the deep sea is so rare that male anglerfish have evolved to become living parasites. When scientists first sampled ceratioid anglerfish, every specimen was a female, some bearing what looked like parasites, later identified as tiny, highly dimorphic males clinging by mouth. This sexual parasitism ensures that a male can fertilize a female whenever she is ready, turning a fleeting encounter into a permanent reproductive partnership.
• A newly defined "rariphotic" zone, stretching from 130 m to 309 m (427-1,014 ft) deep, hosts a hidden world. Below this twilight layer lies the aphotic zone, where few fish survive. Surveys off Curaçao revealed that about one-in-five fish in the rariphotic are new to science, highlighting how much of the ocean's livable space, estimated at 95 % of the planet, remains unexplored.
