Fascinating facts about the Anglerfish

• The female anglerfish dangles a bioluminescent lure that glows in the pitch-black depths — but she didn't evolve it. Her own bacteria produce the light, farming them in a specialized organ like an underwater garden. Every fish that strikes that glow has wandered into a mousetrap with teeth.
• In some anglerfish species, the male bites the female, fuses his body to hers, and loses his eyes, fins, and independent blood system. He becomes a permanent sperm-producing appendage — a biological merger so complete that scientists still debate whether to call him a male or an organ. This happens nowhere else in the animal kingdom.
• Anglerfish live in the twilight zone, 200 to 2,000 metres down, where sunlight never reaches. Their eyes point upward to spot the silhouettes of prey against the faint glow filtering from above — the only light source in their universe. They hunt in total darkness by watching for shadows.
• The female anglerfish grows to the size of a volleyball, but her mate shrinks to the size of a cherry — a size difference of over 500,000 times their relative mass. In some species the male is born with no stomach; he can only eat by fusing to his mate and absorbing nutrients directly through their shared blood.
• Deep-sea anglerfish have enormous mouths that unhinge like a snake's, teeth curved inward to trap prey, and stomachs that stretch to swallow fish nearly their own size. A single meal might be the only food they eat for months in an environment where starvation, not predation, is the constant threat.
