Andean Squirrel (Sciurus pucheranii) lives in andean mountain forests across South America mountains. It feeds on fruits and seeds.
Fascinating facts about the Andean Squirrel
- The Andean squirrel is confined to the high elevations of Colombia's Andes, living only between 2,000 and 3,300 metres. Within this range it occupies the montane rain forest and cloud forest zones of the Cordillera Occidental and Cordillera Central ranges. As a tree squirrel it makes its home among Cecropia trees, palms and tree ferns, habitats typical of those altitudes. This specialised habitat limits its distribution to those mountainous forest belts.
- The Andean squirrel is a very small tree squirrel, with a body length of about 14 centimetres. Its tail is almost as long, ranging from 12 to 16 centimetres, giving it a balanced proportion similar to larger relatives.
- Records suggest its weight generally falls between about 100 and 140 g (3.5 and 4.9 oz). It has a body length of about 14 cm and a tail measuring 12-16 cm.
- Some Andean squirrels display a striking dark stripe running down each side of their bodies, while a few individuals bear a black patch on the back of the head, and in some cases both markings appear together. This colour pattern is not universal; other members of the species lack either feature entirely. The variation in flank and head markings adds to the subtle visual diversity of this otherwise uniformly reddish-brown squirrel.
- The Andean squirrel is presumed to be active during daylight hours, yet researchers have documented almost no details of its daily routine, population size, or specific habitat needs. Because of this profound knowledge gap, the International Union for Conservation of Nature has classified the species as data deficient. This status reflects the scarcity of reliable information on its ecology despite its presence in high-altitude Colombian forests.

About the Andean Squirrel
In the resplendent cloud forests of the Andes, the Andean squirrel darts with reckless abandon, its rusty-red fur aflame against the emerald canopy as it pursues a whimsical path through the trees. With each nimble leap, it seems to embody the very essence of its mountainous realm, where the air is crisp and the winds whisper secrets to the leaves. As it vanishes into the misty veil, its tiny paws barely disturbing the moss-draped branches, the Andean squirrel leaves behind a trail of enchantment, a fleeting glimpse of a life lived in perfect harmony with the rugged beauty of its high-altitude home.
