• Only 2,500 Andean mountain cats exist in the wild — fewer than giant pandas — yet almost nobody knows they're there. Living at 3,000 to 4,800 metres in the high Andes, they hunt at night in freezing alpine grasslands where oxygen is half what it is at sea level. Their fur is so dense it insulates like a sleeping bag, and their paws have fur on the soles to grip ice and muffle footsteps on rock. They are so secretive that scientists didn't even realize the species existed until 1865.
• At 2.2 kg, the Andean mountain cat is smaller than a house cat and hunts rodents that weigh mere grams — but it's built like a pint-sized assassin. Its ears are huge relative to its head, angled forward like radar dishes to pinpoint the squeak of a mountain vizcacha in tall grass. Its whiskers are twice as sensitive as a domestic cat's, tuned to detect the slightest movement of prey in the dark.
• The Andean mountain cat's tail is stumpy and banded, made thicker by dense fur so it looks like a raccoon's — a shape that may help it balance on rocky ledges where one slip means tumbling into a ravine. Unlike most cats, it hunts on the ground in open grassland rather than stalking in cover, relying on darkness and stealth in terrain where there's nowhere to hide.
• Reproduction in Andean mountain cats remains almost entirely unknown to science. Researchers have never observed courtship, mating, or a mother with kittens in the wild. A handful of births have occurred in zoos, revealing gestation lasts around 72 to 80 days, but whether wild cats raise one kitten or four, breed once a year or twice, remains a mystery — a gap that makes protecting a species this rare extraordinarily difficult.
• The Andean mountain cat's range is shrinking because of livestock farming in high grasslands, which destroys the rodent colonies it depends on and replaces wild habitat with pasture. Climate change is raising freezing altitudes, squeezing the cat into an ever-narrower belt of cold terrain. Yet its 'Least Concern' status — used because population data is so sparse — masks the real risk: it may already be gone from parts of its range, and no one would know.
