Fascinating facts about the Andean Mountain Cat
- Fewer than 1,500 Andean mountain cats roam the high Andes, a number so low it lands the species on the IUCN Red List as Endangered. This tiny population means every loss pushes the cat closer to extinction, and it also makes studying the animal incredibly hard because sightings are rare.
- An adult Andean mountain cat measures 57.7 to 85 cm from head to body, with a tail that adds another 41.3 to 48.5 cm, and it can weigh up to 5.5 kg. Its skulls range from 100.4 to 114.8 mm, larger than those of both the pampas cat and a domestic cat.
- The cat lives only above 1,800 m, reaching heights over 4,000 m in Chile, Bolivia and central Peru, preferring arid, rocky terrain where vegetation is sparse. Surveys in Argentina's Jujuy Province found a density of seven to twelve cats per 100 km² at about 4,200 m, while a 250 km² area in Salar de Surire held just five individuals.
- Mountain viscachas supply almost all the cat's food: 93.9 % of the biomass it consumes comes from this single prey. Because viscachas are large for a rodent, the cat can meet its energy needs with few kills, but any drop in viscacha numbers directly threatens the cat's survival.
- Indigenous Aymara and Quechua peoples regard the Andean mountain cat as a sacred animal, yet the cat still faces hunting, habitat loss and disease. It is listed on the IUCN Red List, the US Federal List and CITES Appendix I, and the Andean Cat Alliance was created in 2003 to coordinate research and conservation across its range.
