• A Bengal tiger cub's mother teaches it to hunt by bringing live prey back to the den — starting with birds and frogs, graduating to deer over 18 months of practice. If the cub fails to learn this, it will starve as an adult. Only about 40% of cubs survive to independence, and those that do have memorized dozens of hunting techniques from their mother's tutoring. This is why orphaned cubs almost never make it in the wild without human intervention.
• At birth, a Bengal tiger cub weighs less than a human newborn — roughly 1.5 kilograms — but its eyes open in just 6–14 days. By 8 weeks, it's already practicing the stalking posture of a 260-kilogram adult, pouncing on siblings in the den. This early play-fighting isn't playful at all: it's rehearsal for a predator whose first real hunt could be its last chance to eat.
• A Bengal tiger cub's roar doesn't sound like its mother's until it's 4–5 months old. In those early months, it mews and chirps like a house cat, drawing no attention from prey animals. The full roar — which can be heard 3 kilometres away — is a learned vocalization, shaped by hearing its mother call across the forest. This is why isolated cubs never develop the same acoustic power as those raised in a family group.
• Bengal tiger cubs are born with closed ear canals and no ability to thermoregulate; they rely entirely on their mother's body heat for the first 3–4 weeks. If the mother dies or abandons the litter during this window, the cubs are effectively dead within days. In the wild, this vulnerability is the main reason female tigers fiercely guard their dens and kill any male that approaches — infanticide by males is their leading cause of cub mortality.
• A cub's striped coat is already complete at birth, with the same pattern of stripes it will carry for life — no two tigers have identical stripe layouts, like fingerprints. But those stripes fade slightly over the first 6 months as the cub's fur grows longer and coarser. By the time it leaves its mother at 2–3 years old, the stripe pattern is permanent enough that wildlife biologists can identify individual tigers by photograph for the rest of their lives, making each Bengal tiger cub's coat its own identity card.
