• Only 2,500 Andean cats remain in the wild — fewer than giant pandas — yet most people have never heard of them. • At 2.2 kilograms, the Andean cat weighs less than a guinea pig but hunts prey up to 10 times smaller — viscachas, chinchillas, and mountain rodents that live in the same boulder fields. Its teeth and claws are proportionally larger than a jaguar's, scaled for gripping animals with fur so thick that a bite must be surgical. This pocket-sized hunter moves like a ghost across scree slopes where a single mistake means a fatal tumble.
• The Andean cat has the longest, bushiest tail relative to body size of any wild cat on Earth — nearly as long as its entire body, banded like a ringed possum.
