Fascinating facts about the Andean Bear

• The only bear in South America has a face painted like a skull, white or cream markings that look almost exactly like human eye sockets and a mouth stripe. Scientists call these the spectacled bear's 'facial masks', and they're so distinctive that researchers can identify individuals from photographs alone, the same way a zookeeper knows you by your face. This pattern may help bears recognise each other in rainforest gloom where visibility drops to just a few metres.
• In Quechua and Aymara languages, the Andean bear is called 'uku' or 'ukumari', a word that sometimes means 'master of the mountains' and sometimes means 'lord of the forest'. The creature earned a name that assigns it sovereignty over ecosystems it still inhabits, yet occupies fewer than 5% of the range it controlled 200 years ago. Indigenous cultures recognised what colonisation erased: that some animals don't just live in landscapes, they own them.
