• The only bear in South America has a face painted like a skull — white or cream markings that look almost exactly like human eye sockets and a mouth stripe. Scientists call these the spectacled bear's 'facial masks', and they're so distinctive that researchers can identify individuals from photographs alone, the same way a zookeeper knows you by your face. This pattern may help bears recognise each other in rainforest gloom where visibility drops to just a few metres.
• A 70-kilogram Andean bear is 99% vegetarian, eating fruit for roughly 70% of its diet — especially the seeds from mountain palms that can be the size of tennis balls. During fruit season the bear becomes a farmer of the forest, climbing impossibly high into canopy trees and knocking branches down to feed, accidentally planting new trees across thousands of square kilometres as seeds pass through its digestive system. Bears are the Andes' most important forest gardeners, yet hardly anyone knows it.
• They build sleeping nests like giant gorillas: bent branches twisted into platforms high in trees where a bear will sleep for weeks during lean seasons. A single bear might construct up to 60 nests across its range, each one a different temporary bed. Biologists find them abandoned throughout cloud forests and use them as evidence of where bears roam — a roadmap written in bent wood.
• The Andean bear's range shrinks by roughly 1% every year due to habitat loss, yet it remains 'Least Concern' on the conservation list because nobody has bothered to count the actual population. We may be watching a species slip quietly toward crisis without realising it — the bear is so elusive that some Indigenous communities have only names for it, never a confirmed sighting. Absence of evidence isn't evidence of absence, but it's a dangerous excuse for inaction.
• In Quechua and Aymara languages, the Andean bear is called 'uku' or 'ukumari' — a word that sometimes means 'master of the mountains' and sometimes means 'lord of the forest'. The creature earned a name that assigns it sovereignty over ecosystems it still inhabits, yet occupies fewer than 5% of the range it controlled 200 years ago. Indigenous cultures recognised what colonisation erased: that some animals don't just live in landscapes, they own them.
