Fascinating facts about the Black-and-rufous Sengi
- The sengi lives only in the lowland montane and dense forests of Kenya and Tanzania, from sea level up to 2,300 m. In Tanzania's Chome Forest Reserve, about 2,700 individuals cling to isolated patches of undisturbed forest, a number that drops sharply in surrounding, fragmented woodlands.
- When hunting, the sengi uses a long proboscis like a tiny shovel to flip leaf litter and a rapid-moving tongue to flick insects into its mouth. Its menu is packed with beetles, termites and centipedes, all extracted from the soil surface. This specialized foraging also churns the forest floor, helping to aerate soil and recycle nutrients for the trees they share their home with.
- Black-and-rufous sengis form monogamous pairs that each guard a territory roughly the size of a hectare. Within that space a single animal may build and keep up to ten nests, often using dry leaf litter at the base of trees, and several of those nests are used at the same time.
- Although the IUCN now lists the species as Least Concern, its numbers are slipping because forest fragments shrink and human activity rises. Two black-and-rufous sengi males were born on February 4 2007 at the National Zoo in Washington, D.C., part of a growing network of seven European and four U.S. zoos breeding the animal.
- A black-and-rufous sengi can stretch almost a foot long, adults average about 28 cm (11 in) in length, and tip the scales between 450 g and 700 g (16-25 oz). Their tail can add another 250 mm.
