Fascinating facts about the Sloth
- A pale-throated sloth can swivel its head almost completely around, bending it 270° forward and back and rotating it 330°. This extraordinary range is made possible by nine cervical vertebrae, which give the neck extreme flexibility. Because the vertebrae are so numerous, the animal can turn its head far beyond the limits of most mammals, allowing it to scan the canopy while remaining motionless in the trees.
- Its eyes lack cone cells, suggesting it cannot perceive colour and sees only shades of grey. The sloth's eyes are large and forward-facing, providing binocular vision with round pupils. Despite this limited colour perception, it compensates with excellent hearing and a keen sense of smell, helping it detect predators and locate food in the dense forest.
- Tiny green algae grow in the scales of its fur, tinting the animal a faint green that blends with the canopy. The sloth's coat is covered with coarse guard hairs up to 10 cm long, beneath which lies a finer undercoat; the algae live between microscopic scales on those guard hairs. This mutualistic partnership creates a subtle greenish camouflage that helps the sloth remain hidden among leaves.
- In some forests only 1.7 pale-throated sloths are recorded per square kilometre, while in other areas densities can reach 221 per km². Such variation reflects the species' wide distribution across the tropical rainforests of northern South America, from Guyana and Suriname to Brazil north of the Amazon.
- Pale-throated sloths can spend more than eighteen hours each day asleep, barely moving through the canopy as they conserve energy. When they do descend, they dig a shallow hole in the forest floor to deposit a pile of small pellets before returning to the trees. Despite their arboreal lifestyle they are effective swimmers, able to cross water when necessary.
