• A mink's metabolism burns so hot it needs to eat a quarter of its own body weight every single day — a 500-gram mink must kill and consume 125 grams of prey just to stay alive. Their heart rate hits 400 beats per minute when hunting, and they can't go more than a few hours without food before they starve. This is why they're compulsive killers: a mink loose in a chicken coop will slaughter dozens of birds in one night, driven not by rage but by the tyranny of staying warm in cold water.
• Minks are semi-aquatic ninjas that hunt in complete darkness using whiskers sensitive enough to feel the current of a fish's body moving water. Their eyes see poorly, but their whiskers pick up vibrations from 15 centimetres away — so refined they can hunt successfully in pitch-black streams and under river ice. They kill with a bite to the back of the skull, a hunting technique perfected over millions of years of stalking in murky water.
• Female minks are half the weight of males but three times more aggressive — they raise litters of 4 to 10 kits alone, defending territory with ferocity that makes them one of the most vicious predators pound-for-pound in North America. A female will attack animals 10 times her size if they threaten her young. This extreme sexual dimorphism (where males and females look radically different) hints at a brutal mating system where males offer no help.
• Minks were hunted to extinction across most of their range by the 1850s for their luxurious fur, then reintroduced by farmers breeding them for the fur trade — an irony that saved them. Escaped or released fur farm minks have invaded ecosystems across Europe and Asia, where they have no natural predators and devastate native waterfowl. In some regions, they've become the apex predator in freshwater systems, out-competing native predators because they're smaller, faster, and can hunt in places larger predators can't reach.
• A mink's anal glands produce a musky scent so potent they mark territory obsessively — rubbing their rear end on rocks, logs, and den entrances to create a smell map that tells other minks 'this water is mine' across several kilometres. Musk accumulates in their fur and stays on their paws, meaning every footprint they leave is a territorial boundary. This is why trapped minks are so hard to relocate: released elsewhere, they navigate home using these scent roads, sometimes walking over 10 kilometres back to their original territory.
