Indian One-horned Rhinoceros

Fascinating facts about the Indian One-horned Rhinoceros

• Adult males weigh between 2.07-2.20 t and stand 163-193 cm at the shoulder, while females are about 1.6 t and 147-173 cm tall. The largest recorded individuals measured 436 cm long, 206 cm high and tipped the scales at 4 t. Their sheer size places them second only to the white rhino among living rhinos and makes them the second-largest Asian mammal after the elephant, underscoring why habitat loss threatens a creature that needs vast grazing grounds.
• Indian rhinos can sprint up to 55 km/h (34 mph) for short bursts, faster than a sprinting human and comparable to a race-car's speed limit on a city street. This speed, combined with excellent hearing and smell, lets them escape predators and human threats, but also means they can cover several kilometres in a single night, increasing the risk of wandering into farms and heightening human-wildlife conflict.
• The global population rose from roughly 1,870-1,895 in the early 1990s to 4,075 by March 2025, a more than two-fold increase driven by intensive protection in India and Nepal. Yet over 70 % of individuals now live in Kaziranga National Park, a 500 km² stronghold; such concentration makes the species vulnerable to disease outbreaks, floods, or poaching spikes that could wipe out a majority of the world's rhinos in one event.
• Translocated rhinos in Nepal's Bardiya National Park now roam far beyond their release zones because the Babai Valley offers fragmented grasslands, limited water and seasonal flood-induced loss of wallows. GPS-collared adults cover larger home ranges than native populations, forcing them into community forests and even across borders to India's Katarniaghat Sanctuary, highlighting that moving animals without restoring habitat can jeopardize long-term survival.
• A single horn can grow up to 61.6 cm (24.3 in) and weigh 3.05 kg (6.73 lb). The keratin tip appears after about six years, and most adults reach 25 cm, but record lengths exceed two feet.

About the Indian One-horned Rhinoceros

Draped in great folds of grey skin that look like articulated armour, the Indian one-horned rhinoceros is a survivor from another age. Once roaming across the entire Indian subcontinent, they were hunted to fewer than 200 individuals before strict protection in places like Kaziranga National Park turned the tide. Today over 4,000 of these ancient giants walk the grasslands of Nepal and Assam, one of conservation's most remarkable recoveries.
