• An American lady butterfly can complete its entire life cycle—from egg to adult—in just 24 days. That's faster than a hamster's gestation period. In warm climates, populations explode into multiple overlapping generations per year, turning a single female into thousands of descendants by autumn. This speed is why they can colonise new territories so quickly; they're not waiting for next season.
• Their caterpillars eat over 300 plant species, from thistles to sunflowers, making them one of the least picky butterflies in North America. Most butterflies are locked into one or two host plants their entire evolutionary history. This dietary flexibility is their superpower—when one plant disappears, they simply move to the next.
