• A single alder spittlebug nymph produces enough foam to fill a thimble — and that frothy shell is not mucus, but a precision-engineered air trap. The insect draws in air, mixes it with waste fluid from its gut, and whips it into bubbles using a specialised abdominal appendage. The result: a climate-controlled microhabitat that stays 2–5°C cooler than the surrounding air, protecting the soft-bodied nymph from drying out and predators alike.
• The foam disguises the spittlebug so completely that scientists in the 1800s called it "cuckoo spit" — convinced it came from birds. Only in the past 150 years did entomologists prove an insect made it. Even now, most people walking past a frothy blob on an alder leaf have no idea they're looking at one of nature's cleverest camouflage tricks.

• In late summer, millions of adult spittlebugs gather on alder trees to mate, creating a sound that early naturalists compared to rain falling on leaves.
