• An African civet's rear end is a perfume factory. Two glands at the base of its tail produce a musky paste so potent that humans have harvested it for over 2,000 years — it's the base ingredient in some of the world's most expensive fragrances. A single civet can yield enough paste in a year to scent thousands of bottles. This oily secretion, called civetone, is so valuable that it once cost more per gram than gold.
• Most carnivores hunt with teeth and claws. The African civet hunts with chemistry. It eats toxic millipedes that would kill most animals, then somehow neutralises their poisons in its digestive system — a trick scientists still don't fully understand. Some millipedes produce cyanide; civets eat them anyway and emerge unharmed, then spray the millipede's own defensive chemicals back out through their scent glands.
• If you've eaten fig jam or berry yogurt, a civet probably processed it first. These forest wanderers eat fruits at night, swallowing seeds whole, then deposit them across kilometres of forest in their droppings — acting as invisible gardeners for the African bush. A single civet can carry the seeds of dozens of plant species in one meal, reshaping entire forest patches through its appetite.
• African civets have a night schedule so strict it puts shift workers to shame. They emerge at almost exactly the same time each evening, follow the same routes through the forest, and return to the same den before dawn — a routine so predictable that researchers can set clocks by them. This rigid behaviour, paired with their preference for dense forests, makes them nearly invisible to humans despite living close to villages across sub-Saharan Africa.
• A civet's feet tell a story of life in trees and on the ground. Unlike true cats, civets have semi-retractable claws and padded soles designed for climbing, but they're equally at home foraging on forest floors — they're neither pure hunters nor pure climbers, but something in between.
