Fascinating facts about the Yellow-throated Marten
- At up to 72 cm long and weighing as much as 5.7 kg, the yellow-throated marten is the second-largest Old World marten, its tail alone stretching more than half its body length. Males range 50-72 cm (20-28 in) while females are 50-62 cm (20-24 in), and the tail is about two-thirds as long as the body. This size gives it the power to tackle prey as large as young ungulates, positioning it as a top predator in Asian forests.
- Yellow-throated martens patrol huge territories, covering 10-20 km (6.2-12.4 mi) in a single day and night. Their home ranges can span 1.7 to 11.8 km², with an average of 7.2 km², but in Thailand individuals travel only about 1 km per day yet still maintain a yearly range of 7.2 sq km.
- In the north, yellow-throated martens hunt musk deer in packs, and two or three individuals can strip a carcass in just 2-3 days. Their predation on musk deer links their population cycles to those of this prized ungulate. Besides meat, they eat fruit and nectar, acting as important seed dispersers that help regenerate the very forests that shelter their prey, tying predator, prey, and plant together in a single ecosystem loop.
- Mating season arrives twice a year, from mid-February to late March and again from late June to early August, when males clash for females. Females give birth after a long gestation of 220-290 days, producing typically two or three kits, though litters of up to five have been recorded.
- When hunting in the canopy, this marten can leap up to 8-9 m (26-30 ft) between branches. Its strong, flexible paws and muscular build let it make such jumps repeatedly, allowing it to chase prey onto frozen streams.
