• A yellow garden spider can spin a web in under an hour, then rebuild it from scratch the next day — wasting the old silk rather than recycling it. Each web uses enough protein to equal a quarter of the spider's body weight. Over a lifetime, a female may produce enough silk to stretch 300 metres, all from glands no bigger than a grain of rice.
• The female is up to five times heavier than the male, and when he arrives to mate, he must announce himself by plucking her web like a guitar string in a specific pattern. If he gets the rhythm wrong, she treats him as prey. Males often die during or just after mating, their bodies left on the web as a protein gift to their mate.
• The distinctive zig-zag pattern woven down the centre of the web isn't decoration — it's a billboard. Bees and wasps see it and avoid the trap, while flies don't. The spider is essentially hunting with a neon sign that says 'danger to some, dinner for me.'
• At night, the female removes the entire web and eats it, digesting the silk back into proteins her body can reuse for the next day's construction. A single web might trap 5 to 10 insects, but the spider's own recycling loop means she survives on less food than you'd expect for an animal that hunts constantly.
• Yellow garden spiders can live 1 to 2 years in the wild, far longer than most web-builders — long enough to see a whole season turn, to survive predators and storms, and to pass two generations of offspring into the garden. In autumn, females lay eggs in a silken sac and die as frost comes, their children hatching in spring to spin webs in the same garden their mother did.
