• Its orb web can reach a diameter of up to 2 feet (60 cm) and bears a bright zigzag silk line, the stabilimentum, at its centre. The spider stretches several radial lines among four or five anchor points that may be more than three feet apart before adding a spiral of silk with a 7.9-9.5 mm gap between rings.
• A bite feels like a bumblebee sting, causing only mild redness and swelling. The venom is harmless to non-allergic people and is roughly equivalent in intensity to a bee sting. Although the spider may bite if grabbed, it is not aggressive and usually only bites in defence. This limited reaction means the bite poses no serious health risk for healthy adults.
• A single egg sac may hold up to about a thousand embryos, and a female can produce between one and four sacs in a season. Each sac measures roughly 5/8" to 1" in diameter and contains about 978 eggs, each about 0.92 mm across and weighing 0.46 mg. The female suspends or places the sac near her web, and the spiderlings emerge in spring, some staying nearby while others are carried away on silk threads by the breeze.
• Each egg is about 0.92 mm across and weighs roughly 0.46 mg. The female lays the eggs at night on a sheet of silky material, then adds two more silk layers and rolls the sheet into a ball with an upturned neck. The resulting egg sac is between 5/8 in and 1 in in diameter and holds a clutch of about 978 eggs.
• The spider can shake its web vigorously while anchored at the centre, a motion that can deter predators such as wasps and birds and also help to fully entangle prey before it escapes. In one Georgia observation a European hornet flew into the web and became tangled, yet the spider simply dropped and hid nearby rather than fighting. This behaviour shows how the spider uses rapid oscillation as a defensive and hunting aid.
