• Their nests are made of paper thinner than cardboard — shredded wood fibers mixed with saliva — but the hexagonal structure can support 100 times its own weight. A single nest produces enough paper walls to insulate 4,000 individual cells, all temperature-controlled to within 1 degree Celsius. Inside, the queen sits in darkness while her daughters work 24 hours a day to keep her alive.
