• When a willet takes flight, its wings flash a bold white stripe bordered by black—a signal invisible while the bird walks the mudflat. The moment it lifts off, that stripe blazes like a neon sign to other willets: danger, or gather here. On the ground it vanishes completely. This blink-and-you-miss-it display is so effective at startling predators that the bird's scientific name, *semipalmata*, almost seems like a distraction; what matters is the wings' code-switching between camouflage and alarm.
• A willet can probe the mud with its bill and sense prey moving underneath—not by sight, but by feeling vibrations through sensitive nerve endings called Herbst corpuscles packed into its beak. It hunts in darkness, in cloudy water, in the chaos of a tidal surge, finding ghost shrimp and small crabs it has never seen. Touch, not vision, is its superpower.
• Male willets transform their voices during breeding season, switching from a simple call to an elaborate song they belt out mid-flight, rising and falling like a siren. The change is so dramatic that early ornithologists thought eastern and western willets were separate species—same bird, two completely different soundtracks depending on the season and whether they're defending a territory.
• Willets are hardwired to return home. A bird banded in New Jersey as a chick will come back to that same kilometre-square of marsh year after year, decades later if it survives. Some willets live over 20 years, returning to the same patch of mud, the same nesting spot, living and dying in a space smaller than a city block. Loyalty like that is rare among shorebirds.
• In summer a willet's legs are dull yellow-green. By winter they've shifted to grey. The change happens without any moult—pigment in the living skin itself darkens, a seasonal costume swap that happens in response to temperature and daylight. The bird rewrites its own surface while staying exactly the same underneath.
