• Weighing up to one kilogram, this rodent inhabits the tropical rainforests of north Queensland, where the dense canopy provides shelter and food, and related subspecies are also found in New Guinea and the Aru Islands. Its fur is a muted grey-brown on the back while the underside ranges from cream to white, giving it a striking two-tone appearance that contrasts with its massive build.
• The species sports a long, naked tail that extends well beyond its body, ending in a conspicuous white tip that serves as a reliable field mark for researchers. The rest of the tail is hairless, emphasizing the bright distal segment against the animal's overall grey-brown and cream colouring.
• Breeding activity begins in early spring, with pairs forming in September or October before the rains intensify. The peak of reproductive effort occurs in December and January, coinciding with the height of the wet season when food resources are most abundant.
