• From egg to adult, the white peacock's early life moves at breakneck speed: once a female lays a tiny green egg on the underside of a host leaf, it hatches in just 3-10 days, and the caterpillar soon begins munching on the plant. After metamorphosing in a light-green chrysalis, the adult lives only 1 to 4 months in the wild.
• White peacock caterpillars are feeding on water-hyssop relatives such as Bacopa monnieri, lemon bacopa (Bacopa caroliniensis), tropical waterhyssop (Bacopa innominata), frogfruit (Phyla nodiflora), lanceleaf frogfruit (Phyla lanceolata) and Carolina wild petunia (Ruellia caroliniana). The adult butterflies then sip nectar from a variety of garden flowers, including shepherd's needle, white hyssop, matchheads, wild petunias, cordia, casearia and composites.
• Across the Americas the white peacock spreads its wings in a patchwork of habitats, from the warm fields of the Caribbean and Central America to the southern reaches of Texas and Florida, with occasional strays as far north as North Carolina, Missouri, Nebraska and Kansas. Seven subspecies have been described, each tied to a specific region, A. j. guantanamo in Florida and Cuba, A. j. intermedia on Saint Croix, A. j. jamaicensis in Jamaica, A. j. jatrophae from Venezuela to Argentina, A. j. luteipicta from Mexico to Colombia, A. j. saturata in Brazil, and A. j. semifusca on Puerto Rico.
• Male white peacocks staking out a territory typically 15 meters in diameter that contains their larval host plants. Within this circle they perch and launch aggressive chases at any intruding insects or rival males.
• The white peacock with a wingspan ranging from 5.1 to 7 cm (2.01 to 2.76 in). When the dry or winter season arrives, individuals not only lose some of their bright contrast but also grow noticeably larger.
