• A bird smaller than a robin flies from Arctic tundra to sub-Saharan Africa every spring and autumn — a journey of 15,000 km that takes just 50 days. The Northern wheatear weighs 17 grams, yet crosses the Sahara Desert on a non-stop flight lasting 20 hours or more, burning through half its body weight in fuel. Most other birds of this size never leave their continent.
• Wheatears navigate by reading the angle of polarised light in the sky at sunset, a trick that lets them orient perfectly even on cloudy days when the Sun is hidden. They also carry a biological compass in their eyes — special proteins called cryptochromes that align with the Earth's magnetic field. This dual system means they navigate like pilots using both instruments and the landscape.
• A male wheatear arrives at his breeding ground weeks before females and immediately claims a territory by flitting across rocks and singing from exposed perches — broadcasting his ownership before his mate even leaves Africa. He then constructs multiple dummy nests in crevices and cavities, sometimes 5 or 6 different designs. When the female arrives, she inspects these trial nests and picks the one she prefers, forcing him to accept her judgment on real estate.
