• The western leopard toad is found only in the low-lying parts of the Cape Peninsula, the Cape Flats and the Agulhas flats, making its entire known distribution confined to these three coastal zones. This strict endemism means the species does not occur anywhere else in South Africa or beyond. Its range is limited to the Mediterranean-type shrubby vegetation that characterises these areas, linking its survival tightly to local habitat conditions.
• Researchers have identified two distinct macro-populations of western leopard toads, commonly called the Cape Town and Overberg clusters. These groups occupy separate parts of the toad's limited coastal range, with one centred around the Cape Town metropolitan area and the other further east in the Overberg region. The division reflects differences in local habitat use and urban pressures across the species' distribution.
• Western leopard toads are not limited to untouched habitats and are frequently seen in suburban gardens. Much of their historic foraging ground now lies beneath residential suburbs.
• During the annual breeding migration, which occurs from late July to early September, western leopard toads move from suburban gardens to swamps and ponds. At this time the greatest number of individuals are threatened as they must cross busy roads to reach local breeding sites. Volunteers respond by spending nights moving toads across roads, gathering data and flagging motorists to reduce mortality.
• Since March 2011, ten road signs have been installed at key crossing points used by migrating western leopard toads. The signs are intended to warn drivers of the amphibians and to encourage slower speeds, especially at night. This measure forms part of broader conservation actions aimed at reducing road-kill during the peak migration period.
