• A western bearded pig can smell a fruiting tree 40 kilometres away — they navigate entire rainforests by scent alone, arriving in feeding areas just as fruit drops from the canopy. Their snout contains over 1,400 scent receptors, compared to a human's 400. This sensory superpower means they function as fruit dispersers across Southeast Asia, swallowing seeds the size of walnuts and depositing them across the forest floor as they roam.
• Male western bearded pigs grow thick facial warts and a mane of coarse hair along their spine as they age — not for show, but as armour.
