• A violet carpenter bee's buzz reaches 200 Hz — so intense it vibrates pollen loose from flowers that refuse to open. Most bees visit flowers passively; this one literally shakes the reward free, a trick called 'buzz pollination' that only about 10% of flowering plants have evolved to survive.
• The females are black-and-purple metallic torpedoes up to 28 millimetres long — nearly twice the size of a honeybee. The males are smaller and bright green, making them look like an entirely different species. For years Europeans thought they were separate insects.
