- Females of the eastern giant swallowtail can span up to 6.9 inches (18 cm) across, while males can reach 7.4 inches (19 cm),. This massive size makes them the largest butterfly in North America and gives them powerful flight, allowing long glides with few wing beats. Their sheer size also makes them highly visible in gardens, where they are both admired and feared for the damage their larvae can cause to citrus crops.
- Since 2001, the eastern giant swallowtail has pushed its range farther north, a shift tied to warmer autumns and a drop in September frosts. The milder climate lets larvae survive a few frosts before pupating, opening new habitats previously too cold.
- When threatened, eastern giant swallowtail caterpillars flash an orange-red Y-shaped organ called an osmeterium that looks like a snake's forked tongue. By the fourth instar the organ not only startles predators but also releases a foul-smelling, toxic chemical mix that deters small insects. Though birds ignore it, the osmeterium gives the caterpillar a vital last-ditch defense against wasps and flies that would otherwise eat it.
