• A caterpillar that looks like fresh bird droppings—complete with white and brown splotches—walks openly across citrus leaves without a predator in sight. The Eastern giant swallowtail's larvae use this disguise for their first three instars, a masterclass in visual deception that keeps them safe until they're large enough to rely on other defences. By their fourth instar they stop pretending and wear bold black and yellow warning colours instead, having grown too big for the dropping act to work.
• When threatened, this caterpillar deploys a pair of orange forks called osmeterium from behind its head—chemical weapons that release a pungent, citrus-like odour so strong it can irritate human skin. The smell is a blend of volatile compounds that closely mimics the plants it feeds on, essentially turning the caterpillar into a walking advertisement of toxicity. Few predators try the same butterfly twice.
• With a wingspan that can stretch to 15 centimetres across, the Eastern giant swallowtail is one of North America's largest butterflies—a living fighter jet with swooping black wings and iridescent blue hindwings. Their size comes with a cost: they need longer, warmer days to fly efficiently, which is why you'll only see them in the southern and eastern United States and barely into Canada. They're built for heat and abundance, not survival on the margin.

• A female Eastern giant swallowtail can lay up to 300 eggs across multiple plants in a single season, each one placed with precision on the underside of a leaf where it won't be washed away by rain or spotted easily by parasites. She tastes the plant with her feet before laying, a sensory test that ensures her caterpillars will hatch into the right menu. This choosiness means her offspring have a fighting chance in a world where the wrong plant means starvation.
