• A single varied carpet beetle larva can consume an entire wool sweater in months — eating only the protein fibres while leaving the dye untouched. Their digestive enzymes break down keratin, the same tough protein in your fingernails and hair, which most insects cannot touch. This is why museums and textile conservators consider them enemy number one.
• The beetle's colour-shifting shell isn't a trick of light — each scale on its wing case reflects light differently, creating a mosaic of red, white, and black that changes depending on your viewing angle. This pattern acts as camouflage in the dried flowers and plant debris where the larvae feed. Evolution designed them to hide in the very materials they were built to demolish.
• A female varied carpet beetle can lay over 100 eggs in her lifetime, but she never eats solid food as an adult — her mouth parts have actually shrunk to useless stubs. She exists only to breed and die, usually within 2–3 weeks. They're nearly impossible to eradicate once established because the larvae enter a dormancy state in winter, emerging in spring to resume feeding. A single infestation can cost thousands in damage to furs, carpets, and antique textiles.
