• The caterpillar spends its first three instars (growth stages) camouflaged as bird droppings—white and brown blotches on a black background. At the final instar it sheds this disguise and turns bright green with bold orange eyespots, a complete signal shift that says 'I'm toxic now, leave me alone.' This two-act costume change happens nowhere else in the swallowtail family.
• A female can lay 100+ eggs across multiple desert willow plants in a single afternoon, never laying more than one or two on the same branch. The wings must cure to exactly the right stiffness or the insect cannot generate the 5-10 wingbeats per second needed to hover and feed.
• In the hottest part of summer the caterpillar enters a dormant state called diapause—a biological pause button triggered not by temperature but by day length. Even in a heated lab with constant food, a caterpillar will stop feeding and enter sleep when photoperiod (hours of daylight) drops below a threshold. This predicts winter before it arrives, a calendar written into their genes refined over millennia in the unpredictable desert.
