• A predator approaches a Tolai hare across the steppe. In 0.2 seconds, it hits 80 km/h — faster than a greyhound at full sprint. But the hare doesn't run in a straight line. It zigzags in a pattern called 'jinking,' pivoting on its hind legs with the agility of a dancer, forcing even a wolf or eagle to recalculate its strike. Those massive ears — longer proportionally than almost any other hare — swivel independently, catching sounds 6 metres away. Speed alone doesn't survive the steppe. Precision does.
• The Tolai hare is born fully furred, eyes open, ready to run within hours — a strategy called precocial development. Its mother visits only once a day, for less than 5 minutes, to nurse it with milk so rich it contains 14% fat (human milk is 4%). This high-calorie hit means the leverets can maintain their own body heat and flee danger immediately, without a den. Abandonment is survival.
• Across Central Asia's temperature swings — from minus 30°C in winter to 40°C in summer — the Tolai hare's fur shifts colour and density. In summer, its coat turns a pale sandy brown that bleaches nearly white. In winter, it thickens and darkens slightly. This isn't just camouflage; the density change acts as an insulation system, trapping air without the animal growing larger. Evolution solved the problem of extreme seasons not by migrating, but by rewearing itself twice yearly.
• The steppe can go months with no rain, yet the Tolai hare rarely drinks. It extracts nearly all its water from the plants it eats — drought-resistant grasses, clover, and wild herbs. Its kidneys concentrate urine far more efficiently than a human's, losing almost no water to waste. On a landscape where a waterhole might be 50 km away, this metabolic independence became the difference between a population and extinction.
• A single Tolai hare can produce up to 5 litters per breeding season — sometimes with overlapping pregnancies. That's up to 20 offspring yearly from one female, though only half typically survive to adulthood.
