• A thorny devil can drink water that never touches its mouth. Grooves between its spines channel rain or dew down to its skin, where it absorbs moisture directly—a survival trick so effective it can go weeks without drinking from a puddle. In a desert where water appears for hours and vanishes, this lizard invented plumbing.
• Its entire body is a weapon made of keratin spikes, yet the thorny devil eats only ants—up to 3,000 per day, one at a time, collected in a column marching across the sand. It moves at a glacial 1 metre per minute, deliberately slow, because speed wastes energy in 50°C heat. Patience is its predator deterrent.
• When threatened, the thorny devil tucks its head between its front legs and presents a fake head—a knob of spines on its neck that looks exactly like its real one. Predators bite the decoy while the actual head stays protected underneath. It's a bluff written in bone and held still for as long as necessary.
• An adult thorny devil weighs around 100 grams and measures 20 centimetres long, but its body is 80% spikes—the rest is a slim, slow metabolism barely asking the desert for anything. This is a strategy so efficient that it hasn't changed in over 20 million years, while mammals and birds around it come and go.
• Female thorny devils lay 3–10 leathery eggs in a burrow and abandon them completely; hatchlings emerge fully independent, miniature versions of their parents, already equipped with the same spike-covered water-harvesting system.
