• Thomas's langurs digest leaves the way cows digest grass — they have a three-chambered stomach that ferments foliage for up to 12 hours, extracting nutrition from food most other primates would starve on. This means a Thomas's langur can thrive in the canopy on a diet of unripe fruit and toxic leaves that would poison a monkey. The trade-off: they move slowly and deliberately, burning minimal energy, and spend 60% of their day just sitting and digesting.
• These monkeys live in groups of 5 to 30 individuals ruled by a council of females, not a single male tyrant.
