• Adults have a wingspan of 12 to 14 cm when the wings are fully spread, making them a large butterfly. Their forewings are narrow and mostly brown, marked by a yellow band that starts at the tip and tapers toward the rear. The hindwings are also brown, toothed, and end in a long caudal process that carries a yellow core.
• The caterpillars of the king swallowtail feed on the leaves of citrus plants, members of the Rutaceae family, and have also been observed on a species of the genus Piper.
• The king swallowtail inhabits a broad stretch from Texas and the West Indian Islands southward to Buenos Aires, yet it is absent from the Lesser Antilles. Within this extensive range it is everywhere common, occupying open country, gardens and plantations where it readily flies. Adults are bold fliers that often ascend high into the air, a behaviour noted across its distribution.
• The Jamaican subspecies melonius is distinguished by the complete absence of the usual cell-spot on the upper side of its forewing, a trait that sets it apart from most other forms. In contrast, the underside of its hindwing is marked with unusually large reddish-yellow spots that dominate the pattern. These colour differences are noted alongside other regional variants, each of which shows its own pattern of yellow tint and spot size.
• Thoas swallowtails are recognised as very bold fliers that often climb high into the sky, a behaviour observed throughout their extensive distribution. They are commonly seen cruising over open country, gardens and plantations, where they move with confidence and speed. In tropical regions they remain active year-round, sipping nectar from a wide array of flowers such as Lantana, Stachytarpheta and Bougainvillea.
